As my time in Taranaki comes to a close, I figure now is probably the best time to get all misty-eyed and reflective about the 3 short months I have spent here. The summer has gone by remarkably quickly, and I have loved every minute of it.

I am eternally grateful to the following people for making my time here an experience:

The Rodgers Family: Thank you for letting me stay at your home and live as a part of your family. Your hospitality has been overwhelming and I am genuinely thankful for it.

My Family: Thank you for pushing me to embark on an adventure which I probably wouldn’t have taken on my own. I will pick up my share of the housework when I get back =)

Kat and Kim: Thank you for being awesome people to live with. You have both become sisters to me, and I don’t know what I’d do without you.

My new buddies: Ruby, Tim, Nick, Chad, Andre, and everyone else I’ve been lucky enough to meet during my time here; thank you for making me feel so welcome in Taranaki. I hope our paths will cross again later in life.

Anand Rose: Thank you for giving me my first gig in Taranaki! That gig led to many great new friendships and experiences. Thank you for your encouragement and all the opportunities you have given me.

Everyone at Origin Energy: Thank you for being great to work with. A job is always better when you actually like your colleagues haha.

As far as summers go, this has been one of the better ones for me. It’s definitely been very full, and I count myself a much richer person for the experience. Oh, and that whole getting paid thing was pretty good too.

I currently find myself with a quite ridiculous amount of video footage to sort through, so I will probably be putting up a couple of videos in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!

neighbors close their doors on him rather than listen to him saying “Please!
You’ve GOT to let me in!!!”, and then being beaten up and thrown over the
balcony into the smelly trash cans by same enforcers

47. Being stuck in a cab in New York rush hour traffic – “You don’t understand, I

51. Having Thor the Thunder God push him around

55. Injecting himself with the wrong cure

56. Somehow getting himself into a bellfry and then realizing that a bell is there,
just as it strikes the hour

gonna land a lot sooner than the rest of us!”

58. Being forced to land a 747 without any training or instructions or help, at the
risk of his, the Hulk’s, and everybody else on the plane’s lives

59. Being put in a strait jacket because he’s seen the videotape that proves that
the sanatarium doctor is performing unnecessary lobotomies on the patients,
and then thrashing around so much that he bangs his head on the floor

60. Being stuck in the police department’s voice mail system when he knows his
friend is about to be the next lobotomy subject, only to have the police finally
pick up the phone after he’s turning into the Hulk

61. Being stuck in a cabin that the police are turning into swiss cheese with their
shotguns, even though he and the pregnant woman have no guns and have
waved the white flag, only to have the police bullets start a fire in the cabin, etc.,
etc.

62. Beaten up by a bunch of mean cops who won’t listen to him saying “Hey!
friend’s hysterical mother, and then running into the messy, overturned garbage
his

65. Buried in cement by the mob

70. Being run over by same angry Hell’s Angels

71. Wandering into an Army dump to get the deadly canister of army nerve gas
that has blinded his friend, only to be caught by a mean MP who knocks his gas
mask off and throws him back down the hill, knocking the canister open so that
David can frantically try to put his mask back on before looking up to see that the
MP has somehow brought in a crane and is dumping two tons of garbage on him
(this is an unusually bizarre situation)

72. While blinded for the episode, wandering across an Army training course,
and then veering into the training minefield (see parenthetical at #39)

73. Being chained to a truck while his friend for the episode has been taken
inside the trailer by the natives to be punished under the rites of La Culta de
Cabeza Chocolata

rotted bridge, and then being bitten by a rattlesnake

night while he is trying to sleep, when he emphatically told them not to beat him
up that particular night

76. Falling in a pitfall set by the crazed man who is hunting David on his private
island, and then being stung by the scorpion when trying to climb out

77. Being horsewhipped by same crazed man who is understandably upset that
David will not accomodate his polite requests to “turn back into that thing”

78. Being thrown under a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade float by a mean guy in
a gorilla suit who gives David a few kicks for good measure

79. Making the High Priest of the Baba Yaga voodoo cult so angry with him by
challenging a perfectly normal ritual sacrifice that several of the Priest’s minions
are obliged to beat the stuffing out of David and throw a cloak over his head

80. Accidentally getting stuck in the department store that is being robbed, and
then having one of the thieves lock him in the bottom of an elevator shaft,
underneath a creaky old elevator that is showering sparks, and slipping off of its
cables, yelling “Hey! You’ve got to get me out of here! It’s slipping!”, only to
have the 5-ton elevator suddenly fall on him (this one gets points for originality)

81. Being beaten up by the thieves and thrown in the store vault, having the
vault door closed on his foot, and then having the air supply cut off by the
giggling thieves

82. Being placed in a cargo crate with his friend for the episode because he’s
found out about the problems at the waterfront, and being hoisted onto an
outbound freighter, but having all the dockworkers ignore his screams of “Hey!
Hey! Help! HELLLLPPPP!!!”

83. Being mistaken for mob boss Mike Cassidy, who looks exactly like him, and
who everybody wants to beat up, so that David is repeatedly beaten up for no
reason

84. Being placed in a room that is filled with carbon monoxide gas

85. Wandering around in the service ducts of a hotel (akin to Bruce Willis) only to
accidentally yank several of the steam pipes loose and get a full blast of hot
steam

86. Beaten up and thrown in a closet, and while thrashing around and trying to
get out, sticking his hand in a box of broken glassware

87. Foolishly running in and trying to help a man who brought a lit cigarette into a
room full of toxic vapors, only to have an explosion throw him across the room
and into the row of heavy C02 containers, which all fall on him

88. Hit in the face with a high powered beebee gun, which causes him to fall
over the balcony and plunge 40 feet into the seats below

89. Being trapped by McGee in a back room, and when he tries to run away,
bashing his knee, crashing into a backboard, and doing generally clutzy things
culminating with falling down the stairs and crashing into a giant flower pot

90. Beaten up while trying to keep the incoherent man from stabbing the woman
who accidentally locked David in the closet, and then having same man attempt
to close the door to same closet on David’s head

90. Being hit by a car and knocked twenty feet so that he tumbles down a
conveniently open manhole

91. Being shot at close range with a silenced pistol, after standing up to the
mob’s enforcers

92. Being trapped in the middle of a forest fire so that burning branches keep
falling on him and setting him on fire, and a giant, burning tree falls directly on
him as the last straw (Different from last forest fire predicament)

93. Being caught in an explosion on the edge of the fire that throws him into a
tumbling, rolling pile of large, heavy pipes

94. Foolishly trying to open the door to the shed of airplane propellant that is on
fire, and then being caught in the explosion

95. Falling out of a plane without a parachute, then being given a parachute
(which causes the person who pushed him to be told “That guy has nine lives”,
to which the mean person responds by pulling out a rifle and saying “Yeah, but I
got ten rounds”), and then having the straps to his parachute shot off when he is
still 30 feet above an empty house so that he falls through the roof and hurts
himself

96. Deliberately going to a disco club and picking a fight with some very large
and angry men because while trying to cure himself, he injected himself with a
solution that has unleashed his “dark side”

97. Trapped on a platform with the worker who is having a heart attack, and
being showered with electrical sparks

98. Crawling through the sensitive, highly dangerous electrical service tunnel
for no apparent reason, only to accidentally kick several of the electrical cables
loose and flailing around near the hot water pipes so that he can be practically
electricuted and fried at the same time

99. Accidentally leaving the laser beam on in the chemical lab so that it cuts
across the room and into the highly toxic chemicals so that David is enveloped in
poisonous fumes

100. Trapped in a burning room in the scientific project with ten other people by
the crazed mercenary who is trying to capture the Hulk, and then trying with
everybody else to ram open the door with a jagged metal shelf set, only to get his
hand caught between the edge of the shelf set and the door during a group ram

101. Punched out and thrown in the cactus bed so that David can thrash around
on the cactus, even though he has plenty of avenues of escape

102. Coming to the aid of the gumshoe in the garage who is being beaten up for
not minding HIS own business, and getting beaten up himself, kicked under a low
riding sportscar that has been jacked up for repairs, and whose jack is removed
so that the car can fall on David. Gumshoe’s reaction, in voiceover narration: “It
was a big green thing, and it definitely wasn’t happy about something.”

103. Being caught at the old studio backlot with same gumshoe, by same nasty
bad guys, and trying to run away so as not to get angry with them, only to have
them pull a heavy old scene facade down on top of him. Gumshoe’s reaction: “It
was that green thing again, and it still wasn’t happy.”

104. Beaten up by a couple of punks under the Santa Monica Pier, who ask him
for his wallet, query him why he only has $5 on him, and then forcibly baptize him
several times

105. Tied up by same punks and left attached to a bench press machine as bait
for the bodybuilder (played by Lou Ferrigno) and his girlfriend to find and
become upset over, except that David becomes upset first

106. Being fed poisoned sushi

107. Tied up by the Japanese mob in San Francisco and thrown in his bathtub
with the shower blasting scalding hot water on him (why he doesn’t simply get
out of the tub is a mystery)

108. Having several clay pots broken over his head in the middle of the now-
burning room (why is the room always burning?), and then knocking an entire
case of same clay pots onto same head, and then, while lying very still and
struggling not to get angry, having his pants catch fire

*109. For Dell Frye (whose hulking out predates David by 30 years): Having
David rudely turn off the gamma radiation machine when he’s trying to turn
himself back into the green creature he used to turn into in the 1950s

*110. For Dell Frye: Going to a bar and deliberately picking a fight so that he can
get mad, turn into the creature and kill someone

*111. For Dell Frye: Having David rudely inject him with a cure so that he won’t
be able to turn into the monster anymore

112. While paralyzed for the episode, somehow getting caught in the middle of a
barroom brawl, and while trying to quietly wheel himself out of the room, being
hit by a flying body and knocked down the stairs (what David is even doing in
such a situation goes unexplained)

113. While still paralyzed, trying to drive a car to the bank to stop his friend for
the episode (who is going to try to obtain an immediate loan by robbing the
bank), only to drive so slowly that the big guy in the truck behind him keeps
yelling “Hurry up! Learn to drive!”, and then getting so caught up in watching his
friend wheel into the bank that he forgets to look both ways before entering the
intersection, crashes into a car trying to cross in front of him, and gets rear-
ended by the big guy in the truck, who remarks as David begins turning into the
Hulk: “You IDIOT!!”

114. Trying to escape his apartment before Jack McGee finishes bashing in the
front door with an axe, by smashing the bathroom window, only to grievously cut
himself on the broken glass

115. Trying to help his friend for the episode, the midget wrestler known as “Half
Nelson”, by climbing into the ring for him, only to be clobbered by a large, beefy
wrestler who practices numerous combination moves on David, in spite of David
(and Jack McGee)’s numerous cries of “Stop! You don’t know what you’re doing!
You’re making me ANGRY!”

116. Somehow being caught under a rockslide, and then foolishly exposing one
of his hands on the mountainside so that a big, heavy rock smashes it

117. Being attacked by some mean cops who handcuff him even though he has
told them his hand is broken, and who then let him flail around so that he falls on
his bad hand

118. While working as a cabbie for the episode, trying to get the pregnant
woman whose water has broken to the hospital, only to find that his cab is out of
gas, and then having every gas station in town refuse to give him any gas,
having a really mean gas station attendant yell back at him “I heard that one
already!”, and then having same mean attendant slam the door on his fingers (As
an interesting touch, after the Hulk trashes the place, he ambles over to the taxi
to find out that the woman HAS DELIVERED HER OWN BABY and is now happily
smiling at the Hulk with the baby!)

119. While still working as a cabbie, somehow being thrown into a rock crushing
machine that sucks David through a sandpit while rocks slam into his head and
hands (Leads to a bizarre shot of the Hulk being carried along the conveyor
belt…)

120. Trying to stop the psycho from driving off with his friend only to be dragged
by the car across the parking lot, and then having the psycho yank the wheel so
that David is thrown across the lot into a bunch of broken boxes

121. Being handcuffed in an office by the psycho (who turns out to be the chief
of police), and then having an angry mob break through the door and through the
makeshift barricade David tries to make (while still handcuffed), and then having
the mob proceed to throw him against the wall and beat the living daylights out of
him (Somehow, nobody notices that he’s turning green and going from a size 5
to a size 9 until it’s way too late)

122. Being lassoed by the mean cowboys and dragged behind their horses
across a bunch of dirt and rocks, and then being dragged into the river

123. Being thrown into a holding pen with an angry bull by the mean cowboys,
hitting his head on the ground, and while he’s lying on the ground trying to
recover, having the bull literally kick his behind (and his side, and his leg, and
his gizzard, etc)

124. Finding out that his somewhat slow friend Ricky has locked himself in a
shed in a car with the engine running, and then trying to break the lock with a
shovel, only to have the rusty shovel snap and clobber his fingers

125. Driving into the demolition derby because good old Ricky has driven a
potentially explosive car into the derby, only to have his car bashed by every
other car on the field so that nobody can hear his frantic cries of “No! Ricky!
RICKY!” (One could presumably ask why David doesn’t just have them stop the
derby…)

126. Unknowingly having one of the other guys in the rock band crew helpfully
add some “orange sunshine” LSD to David’s orange juice, so that David has a
really bad trip

127. Beaten up and locked in a storage chest.

128. Trying to help the sweet old lady with her robbery, only to have one of her
mean friends chain him up and throw him into the bay. (Leads to an underwater
hulkout!)

129. Wandering around inside the carnival funhouse, only to have someone turn
on the machinery so that David is somehow caught in a rolling tumbler and
flipped over a few times and then thrown down a convenient slide

131. Konged in the head by the crazed bible quoter in the back storeroom, and
then waking up to discover that not only has the guy set the room on fire (Again!)
but that David himself is now on fire

130. Going to all the houses in the neighborhood to tell them that the boy in the
house next door is being beaten by his father, only to have everyone close their
doors on him rather than help

131. Being caught in a gym by the mean guy who’s been beating up his son, and
then being beaten up by the guy and thrown out into the hallway

Chronicling my life is what I’m supposed to be doing with this blog, so I suppose it has been quite irresponsible of me to have taken so long between posts, especially seeing as how much I have been up to over the last month or so. Although, is not an empty blog the sign of a full life? An indication that one has many better things to do than blog! But blogging is fun. And it gives me something to look back on. So blog I shall.

So anyway, I arrived in Taranaki on Sunday the 22nd of November, and started work on Monday the 23rd of November. Whilst at work I was doing some research as to where I could make some music in Taranaki, and I stumbled across a gig listing from 2005, with an innocuous-looking tag in the description which read, “if your looking for a gig in Taranaki, send me an email.” So I thought to myself, “Heck, what do I have to lose?” and fired off an email to a bloke by the name of Anand Rose. 30 minutes later I had my first gig in Taranaki, the very next night! Things happen quite quickly around here, it seems.

I played on Tuesday the 24th of November at New Plymouth Singer-Songwriters at the NP Little Theatre, and it was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was terrific, I met a bunch of great new people, and I got my first taste of performing a solo acoustic show- even though it was just one song.

I can feel myself growing in confidence as a performer, and more especially, as a vocalist. Most of you who know me will know that singing has never really been my forte, but playing to new people and hearing their feedback has done wonders for my self-belief. The only way to get better at something is to do it, and playing more shows has forced me to sing a lot more. So hopefully this will yield an improvement in my actual singing to reflect the increase in my confidence haha.

This weekend has been particularly busy for me- I had a jam with some street performers on Friday, a radio appearance on Sunday, and I’m playing at NP Singer-Songwriters again this coming Tuesday! I think I’m starting to like this acoustic thing. Being on the radio today was very strange and new for me- I was extremely tense and didn’t really sing or play too well. But it’s over and done with, so there’s no point fretting about it now! I shall simply be grateful for the experience and the exposure.

Anyway, here is a video chronicling my time here thus far. I think it will do much a better job of communicating my experience to you than I can with words.

Oh, Taranaki – Part 1 from Geoff Ong on Vimeo.

Also, Kat’s 21st happened over the weekend of the 12th-13th of December, but that’s a story for another blog/video.

Till next time!

So I’ve been offered a job in Taranaki at an gas production plant, as a junior engineer. It’s a great opportunity for me to try something new, get out of town, work, be responsible and independent (lol), and all that jazz. Plus, it’ll probably be interesting.

It has given me an awful lot to think about, though.

A strange thought occurred to me today, mainly concerning my own reaction to finding out that I had been offered the job. One would assume that my thoughts would be about leaving my friends, my family, and the security of all the things I know in Auckland. But my first thought was actually this: “If I go to Taranaki to work, I’ll have to leave my bands behind!” Immediately after that, I began thinking about which musical instruments I would need to take with me (and how many of them would fit in the car) so that I could continue writing, arranging, and recording music.

No kidding. It’s pretty crazy to think how intrinsically the threads of music have become woven into the fabric of my life.

And I think that might be telling me something. Maybe all this time, I’ve been allowing myself to be defined simply as a musician, and not as who I really am. After all, playing music is something I DO, not who I AM.

Do I really know who I am if I can’t play music? I don’t know.

Which also raises the question: Do I really know who I am as a songwriter? The reason being that, of course, you write songs for yourself (most of the time, anyway), about your own experiences, and if you don’t know who you are, how can you expect to write with any sort of honesty at all?

Perhaps this trip away is exactly what I need. To spend some time with myself (and goodness knows how little time we have to do that during semester) and really figure out who I am.

So today was my last day of 3rd year (discounting exams, unfortunately). The completion of my penultimate year at university was relatively anticlimactic. Woke up, went to classes, came home. That’s not to say that an awful lot hasn’t happened over this year, but that’s a story for another blog entry.

The gravity of today didn’t really hit me until I left uni. Sure, it’s just another day, but it’s the milestone attached to it that scares me. I’m just one year away from the rest of my life. I don’t think I’m ready for that. I can’t even think it.

The scariest part for me is that, in my focus on my next deadline, my next assessment, my grades, my FUTURE, I have begun to lose sight of the present.

My life is moving rather too quickly for my liking.

This article makes me unspeakably upset:

http://www.unconservatory.org/articles/smartpeople.html

It’s from “The Unconservatory,” which, in their own words, is “a non-profit musical organization dedicated to creation, performance, recording & education in the musical arts.” Sounds pretty good, right? You’d think so, until you read the drivel that comes out of this author’s mouth. Or from his keyboard, if we’re being pedantic.

It is rather wordy so I’d warn against reading it, unless you are very interested in the things which upset me. What it basically is, is a mega rant against popular music of every form. Not just the Top 40 stuff mind you, but blues, country, R&B, rock and roll, and the like. Now I will admit that I have constructed such rants in the past (mainly about Top 40 music), but I soon after came to the realisation that I make pop music myself, and am therefore removed of the right to complain about it.

Here are a few quotes gleaned from this article, speaking about popular music:

“Awful music that should serve as cautionary examples of what results when musical instruments are given to adolescents without supervision.”

“Simplistic, redundant, naive, crude, even offensive junk.”

“We encountered a lot of gritty, funky, down-home, barroom music – Cajun, zyedeco, blues, honky-tonk music of various sorts… It held no glamour or mystique or kitsch appeal. To us, it just seemed to typify what became of musicians who didn’t have the talent, initiative, or opportunity to do better. “

“It’s a way of relaxing, I suppose, like consuming alcohol.”

“[It is the] music that is the most amateurish and least sophisticated.”

A few more quotes, this time about the people who enjoy popular music:

“The mystery is why growth in musical taste becomes arrested at an adolescent level in so many accomplished, intelligent ADULTS… They have advanced their tastes in other things. Why not music? And why don’t their simplistic tastes in music cause them embarrassment?”

“So individuals who haven’t been as fortunate as we, or have less innate musical intelligence, talent, musical sensitivity… can’t be expected to have as varied tastes and wide knowledge as we. But that still doesn’t entirely account for why people who are as smart or smarter, as educated or more so than we, entirely restrict their listening to junk.”

“One is that music seems to serve a very different function in the lives of many non-musicians. For many people, music is not an art form, the intricacies of which they don’t enjoy or are not even aware. For them, music serves a kind of cathartic, almost medicinal purpose… It is not the satisfying form or interesting textures, rich harmonies or rhythmic diversity that captivate them; it is the sheer energy (and volume) of the sound. It… overwhelms them and temporarily numbs critical perception and intelligence.”

“This determination to resist growing old… is part of why so many middle-age people stubbornly cling to the adolescent music of their youth. The result, though, is an entire generation of adults who… refuse to grow up – musically, at any rate.”

“Misguided, affluent adults who can do better – in terms of their listening habits – but, because of whatever combination of personal inadequacies, psychological needs, or naive romanticism for what they evidently consider the direct and “honest” expressions of uncultivated traditions… contribute to the proliferation of sorry music that fills our world.”

“In few other areas of human activity do people reject the best and prefer the worst… Strangely, when it comes to music, it seems for some otherwise intelligent, educated adults, the cruder the better.”

Here’s what I think about it:

OK so I realise that I have basically quoted the entire article anyway… But many of these points border so closely on total senselessness that I had to put them in. It is quite clear that the author in question is a compulsive wanker and a bit of a dickhead, really.

Firstly- using the ‘educated people should listen to better music’ argument is pretty silly. Why should people who are educated in other fields (the author mentions physicists, engineers, and the like earlier in the article) be required to listen to so-called ‘higher’ forms of music, if educated musicians aren’t frowned upon for lacking a deep understanding of quantum physics or the mechanics of heat transfer?

Secondly- making music as a pure art, which serves no purpose other than itself, is almost certainly the most selfish way to treat such a beautiful thing as music. Why make anything at all if not for the benefit of yourself and others? Why should one’s enjoyment of music depend solely upon “critical perception and intelligence”?

Thirdly- the author, with his implied belief that popular music is not honest, has obviously never listened to Jeff Buckley. That guy could plug his brain right into yours and convey his emotions directly with his music.

Finally- (and this is the point that makes me most upset as a pop musician) the statement that pop musicians are talentless and lacking in initiative, and that pop music is crude, offensive, and for the immature. Pop musicians hone their craft just like everyone else. I put in the work when writing, arranging, recording, and performing my music. I don’t think that constitutes a lack of initiative. I don’t write my music in an attempt to get signed or get rich or get famous. It just happens that the most natural and honest way for me to express myself is though music, and more specifically, pop. And besides, whoever said that pop music couldn’t contain “satisfying form or interesting textures, rich harmonies or rhythmic diversity”?

If you’ve managed to read this far, congratulations. WordPress tells me that this blog entry is nearly 1000 words long!

Almost as good as an essay. The funny thing is that I warned you not to go to the article and to just read the blog instead…

P.S. Nicole wanted me to put in a good word. Lugubrious. That’s a good word.

“If the elephants have past lives, yet are destined to always remember
It’s no wonder how they scream
Like you and I, they must have some temper

And I am dreaming of them on the plains
Dirtying up their beds
Watching for some sign of rain, to cool their hot heads

And how dare that you send me that card, when I’m doing all that I can do
You are forcing me to remember, when all I want is to just forget you

If the tiger shall protect her young, then tell me how did you slip by?
All my instincts have failed me for once
I must have somehow slept the whole night

And I am dreaming of them with their kill
Tearing it all apart
Blood dripping from their lips, and teeth sinking into heart

And how dare that you say you’ll call
When you know I need some peace of mind
If you have to take sides with the animals
Won’t you do it with one who is kind

And if the hawks in the trees need the dead
If you’re living, you don’t stand a chance
For a time though, you share the same bed
There are only two ends to this dance

You can flee with your wounds just in time, or lie there as he feeds
Watching yourself ripped to shreds, and laughing as you bleed

So for those of you falling in love, keep it kind
Keep it good
Keep it right
Throw yourself in the midst of danger, but keep one eye open at night.”

Tumult is what probably best describes my current mental condition. A couple of things have happened recently in my life which have left me feeling slightly directionless.

I left my band Johnny Palantine on Thursday, which was a fairly big deal. I started Johnny Palantine with some friends in high school 6 years ago, and it was a huge part of my life for those 6 years. In my last months with the band, my passion for the music had faded away, so I figured it was probably for the best that my tenure with the band came to a close. I came to the realisation that the only thing keeping me in the band was my friendship with the other members, and it wouldn’t have been fair on them if I’d stayed on seeing as I wouldn’t have been putting in 100%.

It’s very strange to think that I’m not a part of JP anymore. Despite the fact that I play in other bands, JP is a band which is truly a part of me. It’s kind of like breaking up with your first love- they stay with you forever. And I feel slightly lost without it. However, the rest of the band have decided to carry on, which I’m very happy about.

But I feel that to truly grow in my craft, I need to keep moving and trying new things. Hence, I’ve recently joined a new band, East of Eden, as a guitarist. EoE is a progressive hardcore/metal band, which is definitely new territory for me. I am slightly apprehensive about this move, but I know it will be good for my guitar chops, and I know I have something to offer the band as well. It’s still a wee bit scary though.

Also, I recently turned 20, and am currently deciding whether or not to have an identity crisis. Rationally, it’s just another day. But turning 20 just sounds and feels like such a huge step. But I was talking to a friend the other day, and we figured that birthdays (and the ensuing parties) are a great way to appreciate all the awesome people who you have in your life.

And it is awesome.
